The Workshop

This page is less polished than the rest of the site because its purpose is to document ongoing work and list potentially useful auxiliary resources like subtitles. If you translate existing subtitles to a new language I would really appreciate getting a copy of the translation as well so that it can be added to the page for the benefit of everybody. All the subtitles are in the Substation Alpha V4.00 format, archived with tar-gzip for size and portability. You can open the archive on Linux by typing

tar -xzf file.tgz

in a terminal. On Windows several applications can open .tgz archives, including 7-zip. ISO-8859-15 (Latin 9) encoding is used for those languages that it covers and the rest use UTF-16 (Unicode). If you submit a translation, please stick to these encodings.

The transcriptions should be about 99.5% correct, the remaining 0.5% representing utterances that are unintelligible because of poor audio quality, background noise, peculiar accent or several characters speaking at the same time. I am not a native speaker of any of the source languages and thus if you spot errors or omissions in a transcription then please let me know. The original meaning and style is preserved when translating subtitles to English. Furthermore, translated lyrics follow the rhythm and rhyme of the original song as much as possible, except where a known English translation of the song already exists.

Videos

This is the current list of releases that I have, in the order of acquisition. All the material is stored in a digital format but only those with the source format given as DVD are high quality digitally remastered copies. 'Quality' is a subjective assessment of the video and audio tracks. The letter 'M' in front of an episode number indicates that it is the movie cut version which as a rule of thumb contains about 2/3 of the respective TV episode but the fraction varies significantly on a case by case basis. Some episodes contain the original introduction and end credits animations while others don't. This is also listed in the table. Transcriptions are provided at the rate they are being made.
